A Thoughtful Portrait Experience - What Japan Taught Me About Serving Clients

A Thoughtful Portrait Experience - What Japan Taught Me About Serving Clients

I recently returned from a trip to Japan with my daughter, and one thing that struck me deeply was the pride people take in serving others. As a business owner I notice these things, but as a person it matters deeply to me how we treat people, and that really stood out.

Every shop you enter, you’re greeted with “Arigatou gozaimasu” , essentially “thank you very much” and accompanied by a small bow or nod. Not just once, but multiple times during your visit. And when you leave, even if you didn’t purchase anything, the gratitude continues.
Taxi drivers wear white gloves, and their cars are spotless and fresh. Everywhere we went, you could see the pride people took in their work and in how they cared for those they were serving. It didn’t feel transactional. It felt like an honor to serve.

Experiencing this firsthand throughout each day reminded me how important it is to take pride in how we serve others.

Over the past year, I’ve evolved the experience I offer at my studio here at Pineland. What I’ve created now is something much more intentional and complete.

Every portrait experience begins with a discovery call where I learn about what matters most to you — your family, your story, and how you want to remember this moment in your life. We discover and this together.

As before we still plan the session together. I guide you through what to wear, how to prepare, and how we can create portraits that truly reflect you.

After your session, we meet for a design and ordering consultation and often it can be the very same day. This is where the photographs we created come to life. Together we take those moments that speak the most to you and design something amazing for you to live with.

Most people have never experienced something like this before.

If you visit a gallery, you might fall in love with a piece and bring it home. But rarely do you have the chance to work alongside the artist to create something just for you.

That’s what we do together—and even better, the subject matter is something you love.

You share what speaks to you. I design. You give feedback. We refine.
And then — voila.

What started as a portrait session becomes something meaningful, personal, and thoughtfully designed for your home.

What a Portrait Experience Looks Like

If the experience I described resonates with you, here is what the process typically looks like in my studio:

Discovery conversation
We begin with a call to talk about your family, your home, and what kind of portraits would feel meaningful to you.

Portrait session
Together we create portraits that reflect who you are in this moment of your life.

Design consultation
We meet to design artwork for your home so your portraits become something you live with and enjoy every day.

If you would like this portrait experience for yourself, I would love to welcome you into the studio.
