How to Take Great Prom Photos 📸✨

Prom time! It’s memory time! 💃🕺

Oh, the gorgeous dresses, beautiful smiles, and cleaned-up teens in something besides sweats and leggings. Hello!! Then you add in fresh green grass and blossoms, especially up here in the Northeast. 🌸🌿

Prom season is the BEST, and here are a few tips to improve your prom picture-taking abilities!

I’ve had parents reach out asking if I was available to photograph their child, and sadly, I haven’t been available. So, in lieu of having a seasoned professional there with you, here are a few tips to help you seriously level up your prom portrait-taking game! 📸✨

1. Pick a Nice Background 🌳

How do you do that? What makes a nice background?

Look for:

  • Darker Backgroundsare preferred
    • Woods 🌲
    • Gardens 🌺
    • Trees and shaded areas
    • Simple building facade, like brick
  • Depth in the scene
    • Foreground
    • Middle ground
    • Background

Depth pulls the eye right to your subject and makes photos look more pleasing instantly!

A Quick Word About Ocean Photos 🌊

As pretty as the ocean is, it often is not the best choice for prom photos for two reasons:

1. Bright water = dark faces

The ocean is usually much brighter than your subjects, which can result in underexposed faces so unless you’re a wizard with your camera 📷 I would not put the ocean behind your beautiful prom kids!

2. WIND 😳

Wind can be very unkind to hair, especially when blowing directly onto people.

Now, with that said, of course you can have fabulous oceanfront prom pictures! I’ve done many myself. Just be mindful of what you’re doing.

And speaking of wind, be mindful of it ANYWHERE you shoot!

Dress Tip 👗

If you cannot avoid wind:

  • Have those wearing dresses bring their knees together
  • Turn one hip toward the wind

Nothing worse than the wind turning a beautiful dress into a pantsuit. 😂

Gazebos... We Need to Talk 😅

I know gazebos were grand in the 19th century, and somehow our fascination with them still exists, BUT...

I do not recommend a giant white angular distraction behind your beautiful prom subjects.

No. No. No. 🙈

And if they are standing inside the gazebo? Even worse.

Faces inside a gazebo can be:

  • 2 to 5 stops darker
  • Shadowy
  • Difficult to expose properly

If it’s raining and that’s your only option, then yes, use it.

But PLEASE:
📸 Put the flash on!

Watch Out for Parked Cars 🚗

Unless you intentionally want to feature:

  • The rented car
  • The limo
  • Dad’s beloved “kid with wheels”

...AVOID parked cars in the background whenever possible.

Remember:
✨ Clean backgrounds + good lighting on faces = beautiful prom photos

Your junior or senior is the important part of the image. Help them shine!

Prom Posing Tips 💃📸

Now that we’ve settled the location, here are a few posing tips!

For Group Photos:

  • Pair couples facing each other
  • Do more than just the classic arm-in-arm lineup
    • A few are fine
    • Too many usually are not flattering
  • Take individual photos of each couple
  • Take individual photos of each teen in the group

Remember:
👉 You are the designated photographer and memory keeper!

Variety Matters 📷

Look to get:

  • Full body shots
  • Three-quarter length shots
  • Candid movement shots
  • Walking shots

Fun Pose Idea:

Have them:

  • Walk toward the camera
  • Turn around
  • Look back over their shoulder

Instant model energy. ✨

Tips for Anyone Wearing Dresses 👗

  • Pose with one leg bent and knee slightly in
  • Point toes toward the camera or slightly outward
  • Avoid turning toes inward so we only see the side of the foot
  • Bend arms
  • Lean slightly into the hip
  • Good posture ALWAYS
  • Slight movement between shots helps a lot!

Tips for Anyone Wearing Suits 🤵

First things first:

🚫 NOTHING in pockets!

  • Remove phones
  • Remove keys
  • Remove wallets

Great Suit Poses:

  • Jacket buttoned with top button fastened
  • Hands together in front
  • Jacket unbuttoned
  • Hands in pockets up to the knuckles
  • Straight-on pose
  • Three-quarter pose
  • One hand in, one hand out

Think:
✨ GQ magazine vibes ✨

Take LOTS of Photos 📸📸📸

You will never regret taking too many photos.

Think you won’t have time?

Plan ahead and be ready at least an hour earlier than you think you need to be.

Teenagers, especially those with lots of hair and makeup plans, can get distracted. Then BOOP 💥 before you know it, it’s 5 o’clock and they haven’t even showered yet.

😂

A Little Prom Confession 💜

Hello! That was me at prom.

In fact, I was still sewing my purple velvet prom dress at 3 PM. 😂

It was the era of Purple Rain, and even though the music has changed, teenagers definitely have not!

I wonder what ever happened to my prom date, Josh Montoya 🤔

I hope you find these tips helpful!!

Have an absolute blast, and I cannot wait to see all the fabulous prom photo posts! 📸🌸💃
