How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Maine Senior Portraits
"Where should we take my senior photos?"
It's one of the first questions I hear from families planning their senior portrait session.
With so many beautiful locations throughout Maine, it can feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Should you choose the beach? A garden? Downtown Portland? A family property? A place you've never been?
Most people start by asking, "Where should we take the photos?"
I start with a different question:
Who are you?
Your senior portraits are the perfect opportunity to tell the story of who you are right now—your passions, your personality, the places that shaped you, and the people and experiences that matter most. Your senior portrait sessionshould be about so much more than what you look like today.
That's why our planning begins long before I ever pick up my camera.
During our discovery calls, I spend time getting to know each senior. We talk about what you love about yourself, where you feel most at home, what excites you, and even the quiet places you go when you need to recharge.
Only then do we choose the perfect location for your Maine senior portraits.
The Girl Who Grew Up Believing in Fairies
When I asked Rose’s mom what she wanted to hold onto from this season of life, she didn’t hesitate.
“She’s always been so full of joy,” she said. “And she’s constantly moving.”
That became our starting point.
Rose talked about loving movement and dancing, and when I asked about favorite flowers, she said peonies. We began dreaming up a location that could hold both that softness and that energy. I suggested the Maine Audubon sanctuary in Falmouth in June.
At first, Rose was skeptical. When she looked at their website, all she saw were manicured gardens, and it didn’t quite feel like her.
But when she arrived, the winding paths, the wild edges, the quiet pockets of woods—it reminded her of being a little girl, imagining fairies and getting lost in her own world. It felt familiar in a way she hadn’t expected.
We incorporated movement and dancing throughout the session, letting her energy lead instead of trying to contain it.
Afterward, she texted me, “Sharyn, I will never doubt your professional opinion again. I LOVE this place!”
That session wasn’t just about finding a pretty location.
It was about rediscovering a part of herself that had always been there. It was an evening none of us wanted to end.
Anna: Where Her Story Began
For Anna, choosing a location for her senior portraits was easy.
Her grandparents' property is home to her family's business, A Family Affair. It's where she grew up, where she works today, and where she plans to continue after graduation.
Anna's senior portrait session wasn't about finding a scenic backdrop. It was about celebrating the place that helped shape her and honoring the next chapter she's already stepping into.
Lucia and the Horse Barn
There was one place Lucia spent countless afternoons from grade school through her senior year.
The horse barn.
This was where she felt peaceful, capable, and completely herself.
These senior portraits honor a season of life that shaped who she became, and they'll always remind her of the place that felt like home.
A Future Business Owner
Some seniors already know exactly where life is taking them.
For Bryce, his family's towing company has been a huge part of his life, and the business he'll take over after graduation.
When we planned his senior portrait session, we searched for an open location where we could safely photograph his tow truck at sunset. As twilight arrived, we turned on the truck's lights, creating dramatic senior portraits that celebrated both his future and his family's legacy.
Football and dirt biking were just as important to his story, so we incorporated both into his senior portrait session at a nearby field.
His gallery wasn't built around one location.
His senior portraits were built around his story.
Sunila: Poetry and the Ocean
Sunila had recently won a poetry award and was learning to lobster while working with Luke's Lobster.
For her senior portrait session, we chose Portland's Eastern Prom because it beautifully connected both parts of her life.
She brought her award-winning book of poetry and the medals she earned through years of competing in track and field. The Maine waterfront reflected her connection to the ocean, creating senior portraits that celebrated her creativity, determination, and adventurous spirit.
These Maine senior portraits celebrate both creativity and adventure.
Two very different passions came together in one meaningful senior portrait session.
Liza: Home First
Every senior portrait session tells a different story.
Liza's story began at home so we could include her beloved dogs before heading to Winslow Park—a place where she has spent countless hours growing up.
Those locations weren't chosen because they were trendy.
They were chosen because they already belonged to her story.
That's what makes senior portraits feel personal and timeless.
Josie: Chasing Golden Light
Some seniors simply dream of timeless beauty.
Josie envisioned open fields, beautiful sunsets, and warm summer light for her senior portrait session.
Pineland Farms gave us exactly that.
With glowing fields and golden light, her Maine senior portraits captured the warmth, joy, and excitement of her senior year.
Sometimes the perfect location isn't connected to a passion.
Sometimes it's connected to a feeling.
Simeon: An Editorial Fashion Look
Simeon has a quiet confidence and is known for being stylish.
Rather than photographing outdoors, we designed a studio senior portrait session with a clean, editorial style.
Simple lighting.
Strong expressions.
Modern portraits.
The studio became the perfect location because it reflected the style he loved and allowed his personality to shine through.
His senior portraits feel timeless, confident, and fashion-inspired.
Devin: More Than One Interest
Devin loved golf, but that didn't mean his senior portrait session needed to take place on a golf course.
Pineland Farms allowed us to create several completely different looks in one evening—brick architecture, wooded trails, open fields, ponds, and subtle nods to the sport he loves.
One location.
Many chapters of his story.
That's the beauty of planning a personalized senior portrait session.
Elisa: Finding Beauty in Difficult Places
One senior shared something I'll never forget.
She said,
"Life isn't always roses, but there is beauty in the difficult things."
That simple sentence shaped her entire senior portrait session.
Instead of bright gardens or sunny fields, we chose a dark river surrounded by deep woods. The location reflected her perspective on life and created a completely different look from many traditional Maine senior portraits.
The mood was quiet, reflective, and deeply personal, inspired by her dark river theme and the song "Bloom" by The Paper Kites.
Elisa's senior portraits became thoughtful, emotional, and incredibly authentic because they reflected the way she feels the world—not just the way she looks.
Ben: Where He Surfs
Higgins Beach wasn't just a beautiful Maine beach.
It's where Ben surfs with his dad.
It's where he spends time with his friends.
It's where some of his favorite memories have been made.
Photographing Ben there made his senior portraits instantly personal because they reflected a place that already meant something to him.
Rowan: The Aspiring Actor
Rowan is a performer.
Rowan grew up in New York City and spent countless hours near 42nd Street taking acting and dance classes. Rather than choosing a random city location, we returned to the exact neighborhoods, subway stops, and streets that helped shape him.
His senior portraits weren't about photographing New York City. They were about honoring the place where his confidence, acting skills, and love of performing grew.
Years from now, these senior portraits won't simply remind Rowan what he looked like during high school. They'll remind him where his dream began and all the work he put in in his younger years.
Liam: Home Is His Happy Place
Not every senior portrait session needs sweeping landscapes or dramatic views.
Liam is thoughtful, quiet, and happiest at home.
He wanted photographs with his cat, Huckles, who means the world to him.
So we stayed home.
Those senior portraits couldn't have been created anywhere else because they reflected the place where Liam feels most like himself.
Allie: Ballet and Three Very Special Cats
Allie is a dedicated ballet dancer.
She also adores her three cats—two of whom are terrified of strangers and almost never go outside.
Photographing at home made her senior portrait session effortless.
She could change into her pointe shoes, create beautiful ballet senior portraits, and—somehow—all three cats joined us for photographs.
Sometimes the best location for senior portraits is simply the place where everyone feels comfortable.
A Family's Summer Tradition
One senior's family returns to Kennebunkport every summer.
Her parents met there.
They were married there.
I even photographed their wedding years ago.
For her senior portrait session, we created photographs on the dock where her father worked during high school.
Standing there together, it felt like the story had come full circle.
These weren't simply senior portraits.
They became part of her family's history.
Griffin: A Volkswagen, a New Chapter, and a Wall Worth Updating
Not every senior is excited about having their picture taken.
In fact, many high school guys come into their senior portrait session thinking they're doing it mostly for Mom.
Then we discover something they genuinely love.
For Griffin, it was his Volkswagen Jetta.
As fellow Volkswagen enthusiasts, we immediately had something to talk about. Griffin had spent countless hours working on his car, customizing it, and making it his own. It wasn't just transportation—it was a reflection of his hard work, personality, and pride.
We chose Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine—where my portrait studio is located—for his senior portrait session. With its open fields, beautiful evening light, historic brick buildings, and scenic landscapes, Pineland Farms gave us the perfect setting to feature both Griffin and the car he loved.
Griffin's dad couldn't resist joking about driving the lowered Volkswagen out into the field, teasing him the entire evening and keeping everyone laughing. Those moments made the session feel relaxed and fun instead of posed.
While I prepared their images back at my studio, Griffin's parents explored the Pineland Marketplace just a short walk away. When they returned for their ordering appointment, his mom chose to replace a family portrait I had created thirteen years earlier when Griffin was just a toddler.
Now, that place on their wall tells the next chapter of his story.
One of the things I love most about creating Maine senior portraits is watching reluctant seniors realize that the session isn't about posing.
It's about celebrating who they are.
Whether that's a classic Volkswagen, a horse, a beloved pet, a favorite hiking trail, or a family business, bringing something meaningful to your senior portrait session transforms it into an experience that's authentic, personal, and genuinely enjoyable.
People often ask me where the best place in Maine is for senior portraits.
The truth is…
There isn't one perfect location.
The best location for your senior portrait session is the one that helps tell your story.
Sometimes that's the Maine coast.
Sometimes it's your backyard.
Sometimes it's a horse barn, a quiet river, a family business, or your favorite room at home.
Every senior is different.
Your senior portraits should be, too.
If you're looking for Maine senior portraits that feel authentic, meaningful, and unmistakably you, I'd love to get to know your story.
Because the best senior portrait sessions don't begin with a location.
They begin with a conversation.
What If You Don't Know What Makes Your Story Special?
As you read these stories, you might find yourself thinking,
"That's wonderful... but I don't know if there's anything that meaningful about my life."
If that's you, don't worry.
You don't have to arrive with the perfect idea or the perfect location. That's what our discovery conversations are for.
Sometimes the places that matter most are obvious. Other times, their meaning isn't fully understood until years later.
In many ways, art is like life.
We often understand both more deeply when we have the chance to look back and reflect.
My job isn't to invent your story.
It's to listen for it, notice the details that make you you, and create senior portraits that honor this remarkable season of your life.
I can't wait to discover your story and create artwork that celebrates who you are today—while giving your future self something meaningful to look back on for years to come.
