Hi! Let me introduce myself--I am Sharyn Peavey--a professional photographer, artist, photojournalist, mom, teacher, mentor, advocate, friend, dancer, and sister who hails from Pownal, Maine. I began my professional career in 1994 as a photographer in Baltimore, Maryland after receiving my BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I have lived in many locations along the east coast while photographing businesses, families, and awesome couples. Most recently, I have been focusing my time and travel in Maine, New England and New York, honing my craft and mentoring up-and-coming photographers to grow in their love and knowledge of photography. I am passionate about the value of creating quality, memorable experiences on both sides of the camera.
I currently live in Pownal (aka the Freeport area) with my 17-year-old daughter, Lucia (who is a senior!!), Milo (3.0) our cat, and our foster Boxer, Bella. I am a member of the Green Memorial AME Zion Church on Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine and pre-COVID, I performed with a Salsa and Bachata dance team with the Alma Cubana Dance Company. I currently serve on the boards of the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce and Visit Freeport. I teach photography and salsa dancing once a week at the Maine Coast Waldorf High School. I am an advocate for the environment and for creating awareness for climate change. I’m currently working on a book featuring children in Maine waters, proceeds of which will go to non-profits who protect Maine water integrity. This is a part of my underwater portraits for the environment. I am also a self-proclaimed podcast and documentary junkie. I require chocolate and laughter DAILY. I recently have binge watched Netflix's series the Last Kingdom (twice) and you may find me randomly with a Viking inspired braid. My daughter and I also enjoy Studio Ghibli animations and my favorite is "Kiki's Delivery Service".
I feel things deeply, cry and laugh hard and live for connecting with people and being creative. Photography has always provided me with that ability-- to connect, communicate and create. I began using a camera at age 14 and I doubt I will ever put it down.
My photography hero is Dorothea Lange.
My philosophy for portraits is this. A photo of you smiling should be because you are genuinely happy from within. And not all portraits require a smile because we all have many sides.
