Jessie is a future bride of mine and I wanted to photograph her outside of the wedding day. Jessie came out for the weekend from Colorado to visit friends and handle wedding plans. She was very open to doing a shoot, which was perfect. I asked my friend Tom Carron from Jafra cosmetics to come and do make-up for us. I remembered a time when Tom had done my make-up for fun and I looked like Joan Jet. I wanted something like that for Jessie, above and beyond her great natural look. This is one of my favorite images, and my daughter's too. Lucia said, "Jessie looks a little but sad, why momma". I told her she probably missed her fiance :). I look forward to hearing what her fiance will say about these pictures. He had picked out this shirt for the shoot, excellent choice Brandon! Jessie looks dynamite in it. |

Joya Beauty & Hair That Moves |

|
| I did a shoot for Joya Beauty and Hair That Moves to showcase their talents. This time of year when weddings are slower here in the Northeast all 3 of us miss the constant "hands on experience" of summer. We did the shoot at Joanne's studio in Dover NH and I brought along a local Maine girl for a lovely face. We also did-up wedding planner Donna Kim from Boston, those images to follow. This was my first time working with Lena and I love what she did with Tanya's hair. I have worked with Joanne many times, gorgeous. For information on bridal hair and make-up please contact Joanne or Lena directly. Jewelry shown is from IntriKate Designs, and hair flower is from JCrew. |

I first took Zumba classes last summer when they were offered for free at Pinetree Academy on Monday nights. My neighbor kept telling me how great it was, and how great the teacher was, and I skeptically thought it was corny because of the name, Zumba. Well, now, I am hooked. I now take classes at the YMCA in Freeport from the same teacher Kelly Newell, who is AMAZING, and a couple of other great teachers. I shot some images of Kelly at the annual Casco Bay Y zumbathon last month. I was torn between wanting to following along and get shots of Kelly. What I like about Kelly's style of teaching is that it is intense, and unlike other forms of exercise, I completely forget about anything else I need to do, or think I have to worry about. The only other time I get completely lost into something is in a photo shoot. Kelly's music choices are so much fun, more hip hop and dance hall style than just latin, and some of the moves bring me back to classes from the Belfast Dance Studio days (20 + years ago) and dance workshops with the Arthur Hall Dance Co. from Philadelphia. Here is a video clip I shot with my iphone when I felt still images were not quite doing it. Ditch the workout, join the party ... um totally. |

I have spent the past 4.5 hours photographing wedding invitations for my friend Pam who owns Papier Gourmet on Free Street in Portland. I wanted each shot to be a little different than the next. So what I thought would be a 2 hour project was not. Happens often. I love paper stock, letter press and all the beautiful fonts. I think if I was to be in need of wedding invitations again, I would have to go with yellow somewhere in the design. It is such a happy color.
Now I sit in my basement next to the wood stove I inherited from my great great Aunt Elsie's house. I apparently took my oil delivery off of auto fill, and am living the weekend without the luxury of oil heat and hot water. My wood stove cranks. I love it. I am advised by my father to trade it in for the cash for clunkers stove program and get a new stove. NEVER. If I get a new stove, then I get a new stove. But this old beauty they do not make any more. It is totally gorgeous. I should take pictures of it. So I sit here in the old rocking chair, ca. 1924 and think of all the things I have to do. Wedding albums designs, follow up on designs that have been started, process portrait shoots, update website etc etc. People often ask what I do when I am not busy shooting weddings. Well when running your own business, there is never a shortage of things to do. With my laptop, wireless internet iphone and processing digital images I sit in my old rocking chair and comfort of my Glenwood stove ca. 1910. As much as I embrace the new, I love the old. I do not want to forget the stories I have from my Great Great Aunt Elsie, of walking 3 miles to town and back, of living for 65 years with out a telephone or anything but wood stoves to cook and stay warm. That is probably why I love making images, because I know for a spilt second when shooting that image, that as much as this image is about allot of things, it is preserving a face, a story of a family for one moment that is already gone. We rush and rush and do more things in one week than most people who lived generations before us could ever imagine. And taking the time for some great photos is the best gift we can give ourselves and our family. Also what I love is this: take an image of a beautiful bride, go forward 25 + years from now, imagine when her kids, grand kids go " Wow, that was you! - You were so young and pretty!" And then I apply that to myself now, no matter how much older I think I look than I did 20 years ago, in 20 years I am going to think, wow, I hope I appreciated how young I looked! Like I am appreciating this old stove right now. I also try to think of myself through my daughter's eyes when I get photos taken of us, and I hope you mom's out there do too! Pictures are for them too, and they love pictures with us. :)

Arielle is a former bride of mine, who is now located in Belfast, exactly where she found me 5 years ago when I worked out of Belfast, and where she was married. I got to meet the new addition to her & Rob's family and we had a lot of fun. Willa, the oldest put on quite a show for us at the end, a grande finale to the end of our photo shoot! I look forward to seeing them again. Here is a preview to their family photo shoot in Belfast.

words on expense |
|
Typically I do not blog without images, or write this much, but I thought the response to a questionnaire sent out by My Kate Parker Weddings today was worth consideration!
"What goes into a wedding photographer's pricing? & why can wedding photography be so expensive?"
People often wonder what goes into pricing professional photography. At first glance isn't what we do involve picking up a camera snapping some images and handing them over? I mean how hard is that right? My very own sister, who has a (well once secure) job paid by federal and state grant money, asked wow you make several thousand on a Saturday! Implying I show up for a few hours, drink and eat wedding cake and go home with a wad of cash in my pocket which I could leisurely spend all week long since I have no other obligations except to burn a dvd, right? Wrong! Love ya sis, but you are way off.
What do we photographers do? Well aside from crafting images, our ( my) main goal, we wear many hats. We run our own business with no one to answer to but ourselves. This means we do our own advertising and promotional campaigns, we do our own bookkeeping,( at first at least), we do our own research on new ways to better serve our clients, all the time, we do our own customer service etc.; we do our own packing and shipping, of prints, cds or whatever else we deliver as a product to our clients. Now if any photographer gets to the stage where he or she can outsource any or all of this, than that too involves money. How much do you think someone should get paid as an assistant to remember to ship out that special metallic mini-folio, to arrive exactly 10 days after the wedding, to the bride at their special foreign honeymoon place, as a special request from the groom, nicely wrapped and without her knowing, and perhaps shipped via the best carrier that delivers to that international spot? Well I tell you, a person who can achieve that, is NOT getting paid minimum wage. Hence another expense.
In general photography is very expensive. We all know that one could spend thousands upon thousand for camera bodies and lenses. And we do. Some costs have been curbed with digital, but new ones have arisen. For example, 15 years ago when I decided to begin shooting weddings, I purchased a medium format camera kit from an excellent brand, excluded some of the bells and whistles back then, (i.e. auto loading and focusing etc.) and I knew that camera was an investment. Equipment was a big cost then, so to was the education in knowing how to use it properly!I knew that camera would holds it values for many many years to come, as the fastest changing technology was in the film you put into the camera. that camera did hold its value up until 5 years ago, and now it isn't worth selling! (Still takes great photos, so I keep it.) But now to adequately "break" into the business one can get going on say bare bones $2500 but will need much more to purchase high performing software and hardware to make images the best they can be. Sure a photographer, we could outsource everything past pushing the shutter and it could be like the days of shooting film, but WHY on earth would one want to do that? Half of what makes us different from the next guy is what we do with images after the shutter had been pushed. I would say that most of my clients value the time, knowledge and my artistic perception to make the images I do beyond pushing the shutter. In other words they do not want me to just shoot images and hand over a cd, because they value what goes on after shooting.
Which brings me to another EXCELLENT source of cost; TIME.
I typically estimate that for every hour shooting a job, there is a good 4-8 hours of work that goes in. This includes, downloading images, batching, backing up on 2 sources, developing, editing, online previewing, blogging and facebooking, all customers want to show off their images, it is a service we provide, full-filling orders, mini albums, conversations with clients etc. In fact my post shooting workflow is so thick that I have a spreadsheet to include all of the potentially 12 things that need to be checked off in POST shoot production. This post shoot production time also does not include travel time, scouting time and time spent with the client prior too an event or a shoot. That is additional time. When a couple wants to hire me, often there is a consultation, rightfully so as they want to know I am not a big fat jerk before I show up on their wedding day! That takes time. Enjoyable time, but still, time. Once hired, there is communication that goes, involving the schedule of the day, family scenarios, as there are many many things to shoot in a day, unique to each couple, there can be a lot of communication, via phone, text and email, maybe even meeting up. Again time is involved. It is a must if a photographer wants to deliver the best service. Time time and time is required per job that far exceeds the hours spent on a wedding day. It is probably the least understood factor in pricing a shoot.
Yes there is cost involved upgrading equipment, buying software, paying for workshops, purchasing insurance, purchasing web space, paying the dog sitter baby sitter to watch the loved ones for an afternoon, etc. etc. but time has value. And probably the biggest price tag on photography is generated by our clients. If your house was in fire and all the loved ones where out, and you could get one thing out of that house, what would it be? $5 says it is pictures, family pictures. It is how we remember. And memory builds meaning in our lives. Add another level cost to something that is intangible, art. Images crafted by professionals can be, should be, works of art in and of themselves.

This little chub or cuteness was my daughter eating her first meal. This was taken a few years back now, and I came across some of these images, and I just about started to cry. I had to blog it! She is now so lean and tall, and her eyes tell a different story. I remember this day so clearly, it was a Columbus Day weekend, she was just shy of 6 months old, I plopped her down on my new sample rug from Angela Adams because I thought her skin tone looked so good on the plum rug. She ate real food and was LOVING IT! So glad I have these baby chub images to remember her with. |

I decided a few year's back to try to show all of my weddings on my site. To select my favorite 40 + images from each wedding .Not all the weddings are online, and 40 is a small number to choose. Here is Jacquie & Devin's preview gallery, the latest to be uploaded. I went to town photographing Jacquie in the short spurts of time we had. Again, her hair and make-up is by Headgames Salon. |

I am happy to be a part of Seacoast Bride Magazine's 3rd publication. I think this is a great magazine full of wonderful local weddings and is an important resource for brides planning a New England Wedding. I think the photo gallery maybe a bit smaller than the past 3 years, but the photo gallery and the features are my favorite part! This image is from my May 23rd wedding of Lindsey & Andrew. Lindsey's nephew carried the (yes real) wedding rings in a birds nest. Love it!

amanda & kris : eastland park hotel wedding & reception |
|
|
|
Amanda & Kris were married at the Eastland Park Hotel in downtown Portland December 27th. This was a military wedding, both Amanda and Kris are in the army and that is how they met. Amanda is a Captain and Kris is a CW3 (Chief Warrant Officer 3). When asking Amanda via email about her rank she wrote "You will totally get me to giggle with that. I find my military life very hard to relate to if I'm all dolled up in Maine! I outrank Kris by the way. ;)". Very nice Amanda, even though in different rank structures it makes me think he has to take orders from her! What I like about military weddings are how well the guys take tasks, Kris's best man, Kit, had no problem checking on the limo or anything else I asked of him. Everyone was very cooperative running around Portland taking pictures when the rain pretty much stopped and before we lost the last few bits of late December Maine light. Amanda's sister Allison Violette sang for the ceremony and a special song for the reception. The hot bridesmaids legs belong to another 2009 bride of mine!
